Angels on the Atlantic, Inc., a non-profit organization that takes under privileged children to the beach for a day, asked Stokes Architecture design their headquarters and meeting place in Ocean City, NJ. With an open-ended program (restrooms, a kitchen, and a multi-purpose space), 2 schemes were conceived of to ground the design in its given context.
Scheme 1 takes typical “beach” elements (a wave, a dune, umbrellas, a life guard stand) and turns them into sculptural and spatial elements.
Scheme 2 makes use of active and passive sustainability design methods to create a building that is unobtrusive in appearance and environmental impact.
